(Reuters) – Ukraine’s military said on Tuesday its forces had struck a Russian oil depot in the western Smolensk region, setting tanks carrying oil products on fire.
The Ukrainian General Staff said on the Telegram app that the depot was used for military purposes. It did not specify which weapon was used in the attack but said it was carried out in coordination with drone forces.
Governor of the Smolensk region Vasily Anokhin said the attack caused a fuel leak and fire.
According to his statement on Telegram, ten Ukrainian drones were shot down by Russian air defenses, but the wreckage of one of them fell on the oil facility.
Ukraine has carried out numerous attacks on Russian oil storage facilities and refineries.
According to the General Staff, after the attack on the Smolensk depot there were powerful explosions and thick smoke.
Anokhin did not provide additional details but said the situation was “under control.”
