Microsoft (NASDAQ:) unveiled a new category of AI-enabled personal computers known as “Copilot+” PCs on Monday at an event on its campus in Redmond, Washington.
The new devices, starting at $1,000 and available June 18, can perform more AI tasks independently of cloud data centers, Microsoft noted. One of its standout features is ‘Recall’, which records all computer activities, from web browsing to voice chats, and stores the history locally so users can search for their previous actions even months later.
According to Yusuf Mehdi, head of consumer marketing at Microsoft, the company expects these AI-enhanced PCs to reach 50 million in sales in the next year. At a press event, Mehdi said that faster AI assistants available directly on a PC will be “the most compelling reason to upgrade your PC in a long time.”
Additionally, Microsoft executives announced that GPT-4o, OpenAI’s latest technology, will soon be integrated into Copilot.
The tech giant also introduced a new generation of its Surface Pro tablet and Surface Laptop, with Qualcomm chips (NASDAQ:) based on Arm Holdings’ (NASDAQ:) architecture.
Microsoft also unveiled Prism, a technology that allows software designed for Intel (NASDAQ:) and AMD (NASDAQ:) chips to run on Arm-based chips.
The company said new Copilot+ PCs will be sold by itself and a number of manufacturers, including Acer and Asustek.
