yolowire.com – Despite dire warnings about ClimateChange’s impact on the planet, global fossil fuel consumption and emissions will reach record levels by 2023, according to a new report.
The annual Statistical Review of World Energy report says carbon dioxide emissions from the use of fossil fuels, which are believed to cause climate change, increased by 2% last year to above a record 40 gigatonnes.
Globally, the use of oil and coal continues to rise, as does the use of cleaner combustion sites, the report said.
Despite government commitments to reduce the use of fossil fuels, emissions from this energy source have increased by 50% since the year 2000.
The news of fossil fuel growth comes as global temperature rise reaches 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), which is the threshold above which scientists say impacts such as temperature rise, drought and flooding will become more extreme around the world.
Global energy consumption reached a record high of 620 exajoules (EJ) in 2023, while CO2 emissions exceeded 40 gigatons for the first time.
While fossil fuel use continues to decline in regions such as Europe, where the share of energy consumption fell below 70% last year, it is rising in developing countries such as India and China.
Fossil fuel use accounted for almost all of India’s energy demand growth last year, the report said. In China, fossil fuel use increased by 6% to a record high.
