yolowire.com – A record-breaking heat wave has pushed India’s demand for coal-based energy to a record high, the country’s federal government said in a written statement.
According to government statistics, India’s coal demand has risen 7.3% this fiscal, reaching a record level.
More than 75% of India’s power generation in 2023 came from coal, which remains the cheapest form of power generation in the country of 1.4 billion.
Currently produces only about 2% of India’s electricity, the government said.
Demand for power generation and the coal that powers it is rising as India grapples with a heat wave that is causing extreme temperatures across the country.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the country is experiencing one of the longest heatwaves in its history. As a result, the demand for power to power air conditioners has skyrocketed.
Coal production across India stood at 207.48 million tonnes as of June 16, almost 10% more than the same period last year, the government said in its press release.
“The Ministry of Coal is fully committed to increasing coal production and transportation so that power plants have sufficient reserves to meet the sharp increase in electricity demand,” the government said.
